uk road signs: silent beauty
2021
As part of my third-year university major project, I chose to explore the field of information design, specifically focusing on pictograms as part of my initial investigation. This area captivated my interest because it embodies the challenge most designers face of distilling complex information, instructions, and messages into formats that users can comprehend almost instantly. The ability of our society to interpret intricate data through simple imagery and iconography is remarkable, and deserved deeper examination.
My investigation led me to the evolution of UK road signs, an area of information design that often goes unacknowledged due to its seamless integration into daily life. The efficacy of these signs makes them almost invisible, which is why I chose to title my editorial piece "Silent Beauty." This title reflects the understated yet significant impact of road signage on public safety and navigation.
The project focused on the work of Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert, the designers credited with revolutionising road sign design in the UK. Their systematic approach to designing a comprehensive range of signs not only improved clarity and understanding for drivers but also established a visual language that remains influential today across the world.
Through this book, I aimed to showcase and celebrate the development of these road signs. It serves as both an educational resource and a tribute to Kinneir and Calvert's contributions to design. By providing insights into their methodologies and principles, the book seeks to enhance public appreciation for this vital aspect of design that significantly influences our everyday lives.
