Project: Design briefs and competitions

For my third-year study, I undertook a brief set by either the RSA or ISTD organisations. For this unit, I chose a brief set by ISTD called ‘Biophilia’. The objective of this brief was to encourage individuals to engage with nature through the medium of typographic design. After extensive research and development, I chose to create an editorial piece that promotes indoor and outdoor gardening.

In today’s fast-paced urbanised society, many individuals are increasingly disconnected from nature. This disconnection has a profound impact on mental and physical well-being. My editorial piece aims to highlight the detrimental effects of this separation, bringing awareness to the necessity of reconnecting with our natural environment.

The book serves not only as an informative resource but also as an inspirational guide. It offers practical advice for busy urban dwellers on how to easily incorporate gardening into their lives, regardless of limited space or time constraints. Features include tips for starting off small—such as window gardens, balcony plants, or community gardens. As well as suggestions for raising awareness about the importance of greenery in urban settings.

Through typographic elements, imagery, and engaging layouts, the piece seeks to draw readers in and encourage them to take actionable steps toward nurturing their relationship with nature. The ultimate goal is to foster a greater appreciation for the natural world and empower individuals to make changes in their lifestyles that integrate nature into their daily routines.
